sybil - Harris Hawk
Found in Mexico and parts of South America this species, with its relatively short broad wings and huge tail is highly manoeuvrable. The large powerful feet enable them to catch venomous snakes, rats and even Jack Rabbits four times their weight! These birds are unique in the bird of prey world. Out of the 300 global species they are the only ones that live and hunt as a family group.
Alaska - Bald Eagle
This, the third largest of the eight species of Fish or Sea Eagle in the world is found across the whole of the North American continent. As the name suggests they predominately eat fish which they snatch from the surface of the water with their specially adapted feet. To enable them to carry their heavy catch the Bald Eagle has a huge chest with a long broad set of wings to drive it forward and lift it back into the air.
bASIL - BaRBARY FALCON
A smaller relative of the peregrine falcon.
SPARKY - BARN OWL
Like the Peregrine, another globally successful species.
Owls are a totally different group of birds to the previous three. They have evolved to do the same, but in poor light conditions. Even though the Barn Owl has night vision around 100 time better than ours, its’ primary sense is its hearing. With asymmetrical ears it is able to locate and catch its prey, like mice and frogs in the long grass without needing to see it. It is often said that Owls fly silently, this is not strictly true. Due to the design of the Owls feathers, when it flies, the frequency of the sound made by their feathers as they move through the air is so low, that nothing can hear it.
